While I hate all the John bashing that goes on in fandom, I by no means think he was great at parenting. John had his demons but he loved his boys and in my opinion tried to protect them by teaching them to be aware of the dangers out there and training them to be able to protect themselves and others from that danger. He may not have done that in the best way possible, but isn't that what every parent tries to do for their children?
